Windstream to buy Iowa Telecom for $1.1 billion

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Phone company Windstream Corp. is acquiring Iowa Telecommunications Services Inc. for $1.1 billion in cash, stock and repayment of debt.

 

Windstream is the incumbent, or dominant, local exchange telephone company in Lincoln and southeast Nebraska. It operates in 15 other states, as well.

 

Windstream was formed as a spinoff of Alltel, which was then acquired by Verizon Wireless.

New area code on the way for eastern Nebraska

Old habits die hard.

 

But telephone users in eastern Nebraska need to prepare for a change.

 

Sometime in 2011, a new area code — 531 — will be added to the mix, says state Public Service Commission Chairman Frank Landis.
